Process notes

Sheet metal and welding process requirements

Forming review from the drawing

Bend feasibility is checked from the flat pattern, material, thickness, bend radius and finished dimensions.

Forming tolerances

Forming tolerance is set for each part from the material, bend allowance, springback and geometry.

5052-H32 for bent aluminium parts

5052-H32 is normally specified for bent aluminium brackets and enclosures because it forms more reliably than 6061-T6 at tight radii.

Welding distortion control

For long welded frames, stress relief and finish machining are used where flatness is critical.

Finish specification

Powder coating, zinc plating, passivation, black oxide and anodising are quoted to the finish, colour and thickness stated on the drawing.

Materials

Forming and welding materials

  • Aluminium5052-H32 for folded work, 6061 where the part is machined and not bent. 6061 notes →
  • Stainless304 and 316L sheet, kept away from carbon steel tooling and blast media. 304 notes →
  • SteelSS400 structural sheet and plate for frames, painted or plated for export
  • ThicknessConfirmed per part with the flat pattern, since it decides the forming route
  • FastenersPressed-in studs and nuts where the assembly calls for them, specified on the drawing
  • CertificateMill test certificate to EN 10204 3.1 on request for the sheet used

Stainless fabrication: separate tooling and blast media to limit iron contamination | Passivation to the required class; recorded in documentation. Finishing list →

Inspection

Pre-shipment inspection

  • DimensionalAssemblies measured against the model, with machined features reported on the CMM
  • WeldVisual inspection of every joint. Weld procedure and acceptance criteria to your drawing
  • FlatnessCritical faces measured after welding and again after stress relief
  • FinishCoating thickness and colour checked against the specification before dispatch
  • ReportDimensional report in both inch and millimetre on request
  • PackingCrated or palletised on ISPM-15 heat-treated pallets, edges and coated faces protected

Packing of structural assemblies: by shipping mode | RFQ requires Incoterm and destination port.
